Sandringham & Balmoral
Flood Recovery Planning Project

Together to Thrive!

Following major storms and flooding in our area, SPiCE (The Sandringham Project in Community Empowerment) is working with the Tāmaki Makaurau Recovery Office to facilitate community-led recovery planning in the Sandringham and Balmoral communities. Alongside other local groups, we are supporting our communities to connect, work together, and consider how we can all support our community to thrive. This includes working alongside flood-affected residents to identify community needs, develop plans, and take practical steps to improve connectedness, well-being and resilience.

This project is about recognising our community strengths, celebrating what makes Sandringham and Balmoral special, and ensuring the things that matter most are protected and prioritised into the future.

Project goals:
  • Create spaces where residents can share their experiences and ideas
  • Strengthen local connections and leadership
  • Celebrate the strengths, identity and character of Sandringham and Balmoral communities
  • Work together to identify and prioritise what supports our communities to thrive
  • Build community connectedness and resilience for the future.

SPiCE’s role throughout this project is to connect, ask questions, listen, and reflect back what we’re hearing. It’s to support our local whānau to identify actions they can take at the household, street or neighbourhood level to support a thriving community.
Therefore, we will foster opportunities to:
  • Connect and kōrero with your neighbours
  • Hear from a wide range of voices
  • Identify the strengths, needs and priorities of your community
  • Develop individual and collective ideas
  • Link in with organisations and experts who can answer questions or support the process
  • Find a collective voice towards advocacy and decision making
  • Be action focused and creative

The goal is not just to recover from the storms, but to be stronger, more ready for what’s ahead, and to thrive together!
Upcoming SPiCE events will help bring our community together to share different voices, discuss ideas that genuinely reflect the needs of the people who live here, and ensure that everyone’s input shapes the future of our neighbourhoods.

How can you get involved?

  • Check out our Community Connections Calendar for upcoming events
  • Join/start a neighbourhood/street support group (we can help with this!)
  • Volunteer at one of our local events or pop-up Kōrero Mai stands
  • Share our information with neighbours and community members who might not have access
  • Other ideas? Let us know how you want to participate!
  • Contact us to share your thoughts, questions and ideas!

      We’d love to know:
  • What do you love about your community?
  • Where in the community do you feel safe, seen, and supported?
  • What do we need more of?
  • Is there anything currently missing from our community?
  • What does a thriving community look/feel like?
  • What would support you, your whānau and your community to thrive?
