Matariki ki Sandringham - 22 July 2023
Edendale Primary School was the venue for our latest community Matariki celebration. We were honoured to have Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei in attendance to guide us and teach us more about Matariki. Attendees shared delicious kai (the best mussel fritters from Kiwi Tucker!) took part in Māori toi (art) workshops, listened to beautiful waiata and enjoyed live music and games as well as adding wishes and remembrance to our wishing tree. It was a beautiful community celebration.

Matariki ki Sandringham 2022
Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars, that rises in midwinter and for many Māori, heralds the start of the new year. For the first time in Aotearoa, it was officially celebrated as a public holiday on the 24th June 2022. It was an opportunity for SPiCE to bring the community together and reflect on the year that had passed, celebrate the present and plan for the future.
This special event took place at Sandringham Community Centre in the heart of the village. Attendees shared kai, waiata, performances and wānanga on maramataka, rongoā and more.
We learned how to make our own poi, raranga (flax-weaving) and create stars for Pōhutakawa Te Whetū (memories of our loved ones who have passed, our hopes and inspirations).
Our Matariki ki Sandringham ended with an amazing Matariki light glow show that celebrated the beauty of Te Taiao (our environment).
We would like to thank Neighbourhood Arts, funded by the Albert-Eden Local Board, for their support of this community event.
