Sandringham & Balmoral Flood Recovery Planning Project
By Community, For Community

The Sandringham Project in Community Empowerment (SPiCE) is proud to launch a new community-led Flood Recovery Planning Project for the Sandringham and Balmoral neighbourhoods.

The floods of early 2023 - and more recent heavy rainfall events - have left a deep mark on homes, streets, and our sense of security. They’ve also revealed the incredible strength, care, and spirit of our community.

This project is about recognising that resilience, celebrating what makes Sandringham and Balmoral special, and ensuring the things that matter most are protected and prioritised into the future.

It’s also a space to acknowledge the very real stress and anxiety many are still living with, and to work together to shape a future where people can feel stronger, safer, and even more connected.

Project goals
  • Create spaces where residents can share their experiences and ideas.
  • Celebrate the strengths and spirit of Sandringham and Balmoral.
  • Work together to identify and prioritise what matters most to our community.
  • Build resilience for the future while honouring the identity and character of our place.
  • Strengthen local connections and leadership.

Context
This project is part of Auckland’s wider flood recovery efforts, coordinated by the Tāmaki Makaurau Recovery Office.

Sandringham and Balmoral are communities where local leadership and lived experience will play a key role in shaping future recovery and resilience.

We want you!
We want to hear from everyone — renters and homeowners, workers and students, parents, caregivers, kaumātua and seniors, LGBTQIA+ whānau, disabled people, Māori and Pacific communities, migrants and refugees, newcomers and long-time locals.

Every story and experience matters!

How you can get involved
  • Join upcoming conversations and community events.
  • Host your own small gathering or kōrero (drop us an email and we'll help you set it up!)
  • Share your experiences, ideas, and hopes for the future.

Together, we can strengthen and celebrate everything that make Sandringham and Balmoral such incredible places to call home.

Project Facilitator

Kia ora, I’m Kate Palmer and am your Flood Recovery Planning Project Facilitator.

I have been engaged by SPiCE to work alongside the Trustees, Sandringham and Balmoral community leaders and residents to lead the conversations about how these communities can adapt to the impacts of flooding. The aim of this is for the communities in Sandringham and Balmoral to become more connected, resilient and prepared for future events, while continuing to flourish as strong communities who value the unique character of place and shared identity.

I have a background in communications and engagement across many sectors and feel privileged to be involved in these conversations, which will result in thriving, caring communities. If you would like to discuss any aspect of the project, have questions, ideas or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me on email or by phone.
