ADDRESS DETAILS:
47 & 64 Kiwitea Street, Sandringham |
|

Main access is off Kiwitea St. There is a small walkway that links the football pitch with Huntingtree Ave (between numbers 18 & 20). |
|
DESCRIPTION:
Freyberg Field is split into two areas – one on each side of Kiwitea St. On the western side is a football field that is home to Central United Football Club and Auckland FC. Central United play in Auckland’s club football competitions and have men’s and woman’s teams ranging from juniors to seniors. Auckland FC are a semi-professional team currently competing in the ISPS Handa Premiership, the highest level of domestic football in New Zealand and have represented NZ at a range of international tournaments – including coming third at the 2014 FIFA World Club Cub. In football circles, the football ground at Freyberg Field is simply known as Kiwitea St. The eastern side of Freyberg is home to the Central Cavaliers Bowling Club. This is an active club with good facilities for lawn bowls, table tennis, pool and darts. They also hire out their club rooms for events. |
|
TOPOGRAPHY:
The western side is a flat, grass football field regarded as one of NZ best dedicated football pitches. This sometimes means that the field is closed to public play. There is a smaller flat grass area next to the clubrooms that is open for play and usually has some football goals on it. The eastern side is also flat – as you’d expect from a lawn bowls turf! |
|
FEATURES:
The football ground has football clubrooms with changing rooms and toilets (although the toilets are only open when club activities are happening). There is also a small grandstand and seating surrounding the pitch. The bowling club does not allow casual access to the bowling turf but are happy to show people around and introduce them to the game of lawn bowls - it’s best to make contact with the club before going to check it out. |

RECOMMENDED FOR:
If you’re into football or bowling then coming along to the open days the clubs run is a great way of getting involved and meeting people. Central men’s and woman’s teams play most weekends through winter and it is free to watch. Auckland FC play over the summer months and when they play there is a small fee to enter the ground. |
