SPiCE is a local, place-based organisation, we often work with the Albert-Eden Local Board, Auckland Council and Auckland Transport. We know it is important for the Sandringham community to have a say in what happens in Sandringham and ideally lead the development and design of changes to our spaces. So we make sure we keep up-to-date on on Council and AT plans and consultation processes so we can let the community know how and when to make submissions. If we can gather enough input from local residents we will do a submission on behalf on behalf of the community. We also lobby for changes desired by residents to improve traffic, bike and pedestrian safety in the village.
SPiCE regularly lobbies Auckland Transport for safety changes. In May 2020 we heard of some changes to the parking near the pedestrian crossing at the southern end of the village (near Sandringham Reserve). We invited AT out to Sandringham Village to walk around and see the numerous safety concerns the community had raised with us over the years. In particular, we are keen to see AT take a holistic approach to the village instead of making small incremental changes. We have yet to see any impact of this visit, but we will continue to push AT to consult with community and allow a community-led development approach to any changes. If you have any traffic safety concerns, or suggestions for improving safety please let us know .
SPiCE is also in regular contact with the Albert-Eden Local Board, seeking their support and advice on issues that impact on Sandringham such as the Heritage Toilets, or local events, or applying for funding for community projects. In June 2020 SPiCE made a deputation to the Albert-Eden Local Board’s monthly meeting, to present to the Local Board Members on key issues for our community. You can see the presentation here.
